Welcome to the Ohio Blue Shield Fund
In October 2009, The Ohio Blue Shield Fund (OBSF) was created. Over the past four years, the organization has successfully provided scholarships to five Ohio resident students whose parent was either a deceased or disabled Ohio law enforcement officer. Over the past year, or so the OBSF has struggled to compete against better funded and better staffed charitable organizations. Each of these charities against which OBSF competes are good causes and deserve whatever funds they've been able to raise. But, it has become increasingly clear that the OBSF will continue to struggle in this same way in the future. Earlier this year, I decided to close down the OBSF due primarily to the stiff competition that it faces. On November 30, 2013 the OBSF will cease to exist as an Ohio 501(c)(3) organization. Our family is proud to have been able to serve my father's memory in this way for the past four years. John P. Vulanich was a great husband, dad, friend and police officer. He would be proud of our effort to assist families of Ohio's law enforcement personnel. Though the OBSF will no longer exist, the memory of my father has been honored in a way that makes my family happy. I wish all the best to the brave men and women who are sworn to serve and protect and will continue to support them in other ways now that the OBSF will no longer do so. Thanks to everyone who supported our efforts these past four years. You know who you are.
Matt Vulanich, Founder
The Ohio Blue Shield Fund is a 501(c)(3) approved non-profit organization created in the memory of John P. Vulanich. Active in his community of Niles, Ohio for nearly his entire adult life, John Spent 25 of those years (1958-1983) as a Niles City Police Officer. He was very proud of his police service, so upon his death in August 2009 our family decided to create the Ohio Blue Shield Fund in his memory and honor.
